How to Calculate Your GPA by Hand (With Examples)

Your GPA shows up on transcripts, scholarship applications, and grad school forms, but most students never learn exactly how it’s calculated. Once you understand the math, you can predict your GPA before grades are even posted.

Why GPA is weighted, not just averaged

A common misconception is that GPA is a simple average of your letter grades converted to numbers. It’s actually a credit-weighted average, a 4-credit course affects your GPA more than a 1-credit course, because it contributes more total grade points. This is why a strong grade in a heavy course matters more than the same grade in a light one.

The three-step process

Convert each letter grade to grade points on the 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, and so on).
Multiply each course’s grade points by its credit hours to get that course’s quality points.
Add up all quality points, add up all credit hours, then divide the two totals.

A full worked example

Say a student takes four courses in a semester:

Total credits: 4 + 3 + 3 + 1 = 11. Total quality points: 14.8 + 9.0 + 12.0 + 4.0 = 39.8. GPA: 39.8 ÷ 11 = 3.62.

Notice that even though the student earned an A in both statistics and the art elective, statistics (3 credits) contributed three times more quality points than the art elective (1 credit), that’s the weighting effect in action.
