How length, weight, and volume conversions work
Every unit in a category is defined by a conversion factor to one shared base unit (meters for length, kilograms for weight, liters for volume). To convert between any two units, first convert to the base unit, then convert from the base unit to your target:

How temperature conversions work
- Celsius to Fahrenheit: F = C × 9/5 + 32
- Fahrenheit to Celsius: C = (F − 32) × 5/9
- Celsius to Kelvin: K = C + 273.15

Why can’t temperature use the same conversion method as length or weight?
Length and weight scales share a common zero point, so a simple multiplication factor works. Temperature scales have different zero points (0°C isn’t 0°F), so a direct formula with both multiplication and addition is required instead.
What’s the difference between a US gallon and a UK (imperial) gallon?
A US gallon is about 3.785 liters, while a UK imperial gallon is about 4.546 liters, roughly 20% larger. Always confirm which system you’re working with.
