How this final grade calculator works

Enter your current grade before the final, how much the final exam is worth toward your total grade, and the overall grade you want to reach. The calculator tells you the exact score you need on the final to get there.

The formula

Needed Score = ( Target − Current × (1 − Weight) ) ÷ Weight

Weight is the final exam’s share of your total grade, expressed as a decimal (30% becomes 0.30). Current is your grade on everything completed so far, and Target is the overall grade you’re aiming for.

Step-by-step

Convert the final’s weight to a decimal.
Multiply your current grade by (1 minus the weight), this is how much your existing work already contributes to your final grade.
Subtract that from your target grade.
Divide the result by the weight to get the score you need on the final.

Worked example

Current grade before the final: 85%. Final exam weight: 30% of the total grade. Target overall grade: 90%.

Contribution from existing work: 85% × (1 − 0.30) = 85% × 0.70 = 59.5 points
Remaining needed: 90% − 59.5% = 30.5 points
Score needed on final: 30.5% ÷ 0.30 = ≈ 101.7%

In this example, hitting a 90% overall isn’t achievable even with a perfect final score, since 101.7% exceeds 100%. The calculator flags this so you can adjust your target grade or focus on extra credit opportunities instead.

Common mistakes

Using the wrong weight. Double-check your syllabus, some finals are 20%, others 40% or more of the total grade.
Forgetting rounding rules. Some professors round final grades up at certain thresholds; check your syllabus for exact policy.
Confusing current grade with total points earned versus total points possible, make sure you’re using a percentage, not a raw point total.

What if the score I need is over 100%?

It means your target grade isn’t achievable with a perfect score alone, given your current grade and the final’s weight. You may need to ask about extra credit, or adjust your target grade.

What if I already have the grade I want, regardless of my final?

If the calculated needed score is zero or negative, your current work has already secured that overall grade no matter what you score on the final.
